Invercargill racing driver Liam MacDonald has maintained his championship lead in Class 2 of the BNT V8’s Championship after Round 3 of the series at Mike Pero Motorsport Park at Ruapuna.
MacDonald, the defending Class 2 BNT V8’s Champion, finished third overall for the round after a fuel issue late in the final race cost him dearly. MacDonald was gunning for his third straight round victory at the Canterbury circuit but with a 5 second lead and just 2 laps to go in the third and final race of the weekend MacDonald’s Speedy Signs Ford Falcon slowed with a fuel issue that ultimately forced the Southlander out of the race.
However despite the non-finish MacDonald still had enough points to take third place overall behind Chelsea Herbert. Earlier in the weekend MacDonald had qualified fastest at the technical 3.33 kilometre circuit. He finished second behind Auckland driver Chelsea Herbert in Saturday afternoon’s opening race before winning the second contest on Sunday morning.
While the fuel issue in the final race cost him the round win MacDonald was still happy to leave Mike Pero Motorsport Park with the championship lead, though Herbert has now closed the gap to just 44 points.
MacDonald and the Speedy Signs Ford Falcon now head south to their home circuit Teretonga Park next weekend where there will undoubtedly be strong crowd support.
